HPD urges residents to help keep themselves safe

Houston police today launched the city's March on Crime campaign, aiming to make citizens more aware this month of what they can do to reduce crime and violence in their neighborhoods.

In its 24th year, the campaign is coupled this month with HPD's "Keep Houston Safe" program, which includes taking mobile command posts into neighborhoods, adding more patrols and recruiting citizens and business owners to pay more attention to what is going on around their homes and shopping areas, Hurtt said.

"Citizens sign pledges that they will help us prevent crime by being alert themselves and also taking extra initiatives to protect their homes and property," Hurrt said today. "This is a full-court press by citizens to keep Houston safe."

People who want information about the March on Crime or Keep Houston Safe can get it online from the HPD Web site at www.houstonpolice.org or call HPD community outreach at 713-309-3200, Hurtt said.

Houstonians can report suspicious activity in their neighborhoods by calling 713-884-3131.
